It is always great when a new CD arrives with an air of anticipation.

Garry Maginnis is a young singer from Ireland who is now based in the North West of England who uses influences from folk, blues and Irish traditional music to craft his personal songs.

This is a fascinating EP. A collection of seven original songs that focus on life and how we cope.

I was struck by the quality of the writing. The recording is a little rough in places but that's OK - it's the songs that matter. And the songwriting is first-class.

Songs like Streets of Belfast - a long narrative with a simple, haunting arrangement. At over seven minutes long it's the longest track on the EP but it is quite brilliant.

There is an air of vulnerability which is endearing. Hometown Boy and Long Way Home are simple powerful songs.

It is encouraging to come across young talent as bright as this. Long may they shine.
