Blues rocker Larry Miller is known for this great live shows and his mastery of the guitar, following in the footsteps of Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher.

His latest album Soldier of the Line features some great tasteful blues rock guitar - at time there is a temptation to overplay (there are only nine tracks here) - but this is a fine blues rock album that breaks all the rules to great effect.

The opening track, One Fine Day, is a power ballad complete with horn section, that builds from a slow beginning into a rollicking finale.

The title track is a departure - acoustic guitar and cello combing beautifully - to tell the story of a First World War soldier.

Bathsheba, the longest track at 7.38, is another slow burner complete with a string section, that you know is going to explode - and boy it surely does!

Other tracks such as the riffy Our Time Is Coming are less successful and Larry's vocals are sometimes stretched to the limit.

But overall this is an accomplished album with a several surprises thrown in. The guitar shines through.
