There seem to be a lot of sayings that start with the words, "all good things". Two spring to mind with Holy Loneliness Divine, the latest release from Joseph Parsons and his band. All good things come to those who wait, because arguably this is the best album released by the Joseph Parsons Band. Sadly, all good things must come to an end as well, as this is the final project before the band go their separate ways to explore new creative endeavours along individual musical paths.

There's certainly a sense of the end about the release. It feels as though this has been honed and hewn from numerous sessions and shows, with everyone relaxed and fully on form. Each member of the band fully produced and mixed one song, allowing them all to showcase their talents. While that could have made for a slightly disjointed experience, the album really holds together throughout, and we get a wonderfully rich and expansive sound from start to finish.

Hitting the end of the road together, Holy Loneliness Divine could have been become a performative behemoth of an album. Instead what we get is an unpretentious release with the production perfectly crafted to allow each song to shine. Parsons' vocal talents are still very much front and centre, and he's on fine form whatever the tempo, sounding as fresh as he has in years.

It's hard to pick out highlights from the record, as this is the kind of album that has you picking a different favourite each time you listen. The opening track, Dreaming A Universe, always grabs the attention straight away however. Produced by Freddi Lubitz it's one of the tracks with a lot going on, and it's a sonic soundscape that draws you in immediately. My My Caroline is another one that proves to be a captivating listen on each spin, a bit more stripped back, but with a quality that really sticks in the mind.

As sad as it is when such things end, if you're going to take that decision you may as well bow out at the very top of your collective game. I'm sure each of these incredibly talented musicians will produce wonderful music for years to come, but Holy Loneliness Divine is going to be a high bar to live up to for each of them.
