There is something deliciously delightful about an album called "Words Of Wisdom" being entirely instrumental. In fact I almost felt pranked when playing though the album for the first time. I say that because Greg Hancock is a great narrative songwriter with a knack of turning the everyday into very listenable songs.
It turns out he doesn't needs the words as much as I thought he did, particularly when the album is contemplative rather than following a story or life experience, but this isn't contemplating life for life's sake this explores more than big pictures, it isn't addressing questions like, am I happy? It's a lot deeper than that.
For me nothing brings that home more than "Aleppo", a city that has had influence for thousands of years and which still finds itself in the news today with but culture and physical clashes happening every single day and yet somehow life still seems to go on and it's that aspect that seems to come through the chords, to evoke the clash, should I stay or should I go? It's a track that feels at the heart of dilemma.
"Odyssey FC" on the other hand and as the name implies is much more of a journey songs, but one that has definite stops of you can almost feel choices being applied as tempo and mood change.
There is a lot about this album to enjoy, for me that this is not a solo guitar album speaks a lot, there are other musicians providing their voice to the album, other traveller's on the journey, different opinions metaphorically floated.
Too often "Words Of Wisdom" type albums become self indulgent, difficult to listen to in a single sitting, that's definitely not the case hear. This is an album that gives you time to share the share the space, time to think, to agree or disagree as a wise man once said, sometimes the greatest wisdom is what's left unsaid.
