There is something deeply nostalgic about the eponymous debut release from sundayclub. It's not so much the musical stylings of the Manitoban duo, with their ethereal indie feeling perfectly modern and fresh. It's more the way they capture the aimless ennui of that portion of your life when you've hit adulthood but not yet let it fully define you. It's an album full of moments of melancholic vulnerability, tapping into not one specific moment in time, but a moment nearly all of us have gone through at different times in our lives.
The creation of the album was not a quick process, and stretches back all the way to the pandemic, where Courtney Carmichael and Nikki St. Pierre were starting to develop their sound. Songs such as Sad Summer come out of what was a formative experience for so many people, especially to those of a certain generation. The idea of being stuck and lonely while life is on hold, capturing glimpses of what should be through various screens.
That long gestation can felt throughout the record. It's an unhurried experience, never afraid to dwell and reflect quietly in the moment. Carmichael's vocals are beautiful but elusive at times, and it can take a few listens to really click into the lyrics, though they undoubtedly reward determined listeners. There's a lot of joy to be had in just surrendering to the soundscape as well and letting it all wash over you. You'll still catch their drift.
Some things are just worth the wait. While sundayclub may be an album some years in the making, everything feels crafted to perfection. Having found their voice and their sound, hopefully the next release won't take as long to birth.
