It doesn't seem that long ago that Dodson & Fogg released their self-titled debut album, well "Derring Do" simply picks up the batton and continues taking the band forward. In many ways they are more of a collective built around the leadership of Chris Wade, with members of Hawkwind, Nick Turner; Alison O'Donnell of Mellow Candle and Trees, Celia Humphris and others all featuring on the album, with the latter being used most frequently.

Even if you didn't get their debut album, that guestlist alone should point you very much in the direction that this album takes off, i.e. predominantly folk rock, with a few elements of prog and psyche thrown in for good measure and quite simply the musicianship throughout is pretty much flawless.

One thing that did catch me by surprise on "Derring Do" was the light, almost summery feel that the album has in places, the sequence of "What Goes Around" and "Too Bright" especially, have got much more of a breezy sound than I was expecting, a very pleasant surprise.

"Derring Do" is very English in feel and you can feel that it takes pride that and that is pride in the indigenous music, a sound to be properly celebrated and there is no doubting that Dodson & Fogg do that right through the fifteen tracks that the album consists of. They also do it whilst giving that sound a contemporary feel, one that is very much live and vibrant.
