The signings are coming thick and fast for Xtra Mile records at the moment and the latest addition to their roster is Kent based songsmith Will Varley. Having WALKED 130 miles whilst touring his 2011 album 'Advert Soundtracks' Varley has built up a reputation with his often anarchic/often heartfelt gigs and now finds himself releasing a 5 track EP of live songs a mere 4 weeks after signing a recording contract before going on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in support of Frank Tuner. Phew, some artists don't have a career like that in 40 years let alone 4!

On first listen Varley might sound like 'just another hipster with a guitar' but given repeated spins the EP reveals a very astute lyricist and equally accomplished singer. The politically charged 'We Don't Believe You" is timed perfectly to be released the day before we go to the polls as Varley spits out "no man has the right to tell another human being that access is denied to any corner of this planet and any moment of their lives". Its stirring stuff but the mood shifts quickly with the gentle but impassioned paean of cradle to grave that is "King For A King".

You want a reference point -think a more sophisticated Beans On Toast; similar social conscious but delivered in a wordier manner. 'Live At The Lighthouse' is a great introduction to a singer/songwriter who could become a notable commentator. Bring on the next album please!
