A former drummer for the likes of Young Heart Attack and The Polyphonic Spree before co-founding folk-country duo The O's, this, on which he's joined by Toby Pipes from Deep Blue Something on guitars, keys and bass, marks the Texas born Young's solo debut and if you're partial to chiming guitars, 70s power pop twang and melodies loaded with hooks, then you won't go far wrong.

Coming out of the starting gate with 'Get Around' (as in what goes around comes around) with its echoes of The Byrds and Teenage Fanclub, it kicks into 60s hints of The Searchers with 'Make You Wanna Stay' (doomed relationships are a recurring theme) before the slower paced walking beat, guitar jangles of the more romantically optimistic 'Shine On Me'. There's more of that Sixties Merseybeat to be heard on 'Blue Eyed' and, back to hearts going up in flames, 'Out Of My Mind' ("Why do I feel like we're hung up in heaven when we're headed for hell") while McGuinn feathers adorn 'Wrong Place, Wrong Time' (another one about bad luck with the ladies) and 'Five Cents' ("if you're picking up your phone/And giving me your five cents per play/Then we both got a nickel worth of feeling ok") gives you an idea of what The Beatles might have sounded like if they'd had Duane Eddy's telecaster twang.

There's a heavier edge to 'Rattled' where Petty and shoegaze snuggle up, 'Daze Of The Week' is a playful Lone Star bar band stomp about the craziness of being a working musician ("Write a couple more songs on a Wednesday/Try 'em out the next night, see what they say/I'm a hurricane comin in sideways/Probably won't remember much the next day/Whatever's left of me is comin home") while, Garth Brooks referencing album closer Drinkin' addresses the macho notion of what it takes to be a man ("A steady grip, a loving woman, and a drink in your other hand") and ends up busted, broke and burned with an alcohol habit that won't quit.

A rare cosmic event when the planet crosses the Sun and is visibly silhouetted by its rays, there won't be another Mercury transit until 2032. This will pass the time nicely until then.
