Jon Palmer Jon Palmer is one of those musicians that delivers exactly what you hope he will. Whether performing live or in the studio, he never wavers from his solid folk rock sound. Most of his recordings are with his very successful band, but this new album, is a solo project with a few supporting musicians. His following increases with every concert and recording.
Many years ago, an American comedian named Flip Wilson coined the phrase "what you see is what you get" and this sums up Jon and his music perfectly. Pure unadulterated storytelling wrapped up in a glorious folk-rock package. Never pretentious and always hitting the right notes both musically and lyrically.
From the opening track "All the Day Long Day" with its Yorkshire brass band feel, to the superb piano driven "When Winter Comes Around" the quality of the music never falters.
Jon claims that the songs on here were not suited to the band and were found down the back of the settee. The latter being a bit tongue in cheek no doubt! I am not convinced about not being suited to the band having seen them on numerous occasions, I do understand however why he would think that as instruments not normally associated with the band such as cello, cornet, flute and saxophone can all be heard here but are not normally used by the band. The piano on the final track is just superb. They all combine here to provide a vehicle for Jon's attempts to stretch himself and try out different approaches.
The sign of a good songwriter is the ability to write lyrics that both stand out and make the listener think! This album is a perfect example of Jon's imagination as topics such as workers rights, eating disorders and positive thought are all tackled through the power of music.
Jon Palmer is a man of real passion and conviction, delivering music and lyrics that deserve to be both listened to and to live by.
