Sibling duo Mabel and Ivy WIndred-Wornes have been singing harmonies together forever, and started gigging at an incredibly early age. Debut album Staring At The Starry Ceiling was released back in 2016 when they were 16 and 14. Three years later their sophomore album Your Company would go on to deservedly win the 2020 Independent Music Awards' Best Folk Singer-Songwriter Album. Wonderful Oblivion is studio album number three, and represents another evolutionary leap as their best to date.
There are obvious comparisons one could make about the Australian duo. Indigo Girls have previously been mentioned as a touching point, and First Aid Kid is another name that springs to mind. Wonderful Oblivion is a glorious showcase for the Windred-Wornes' vocal harmonies that are utterly enchanting throughout. Their voices hold you enthralled from the first note to the last, and as the album comes to an end with the title track, it feels a little like waking from a dream you don't want to end.
There have already been a number of singles released over the last six months to whet the appetite. The first of those is probably the highlight of the album, though I suspect this is the kind of album where your favourite will change over time as different songs capture you under their spell. Pockets of Stones certainly captured my attention on release, and I've listened to it many times since. It's a song about honesty and opening up, and is bound to resonate with most who hear it.
Gravity was another single, and another highlight, covering false hope and an almost toxic positivity that leaves you ignoring what could be right before your eyes. It's a great example of one of their great strengths; the ability to pull you into these incredibly intimate tracks. Of those tracks that haven't yet been released as singles, the pick is probably Miranda, a song about intense jealousy. They sang a version of this with Edgelarks which is also well worth a listen.
Charm of Finches are a duo on the rise, and it's easy to see why. You won't find a more beautiful and captivating album than Wonderful Oblivion, and it should get them a lot more attention. With the evolutionary trajectory from album to album, I cannot wait to see what they do next. We even get to enjoy them in the UK next year, with a tour planned to start next Spring which looks to be unmissable.
