I like albums that surprise and King Of Anglia certainly does that. From the moment you see the cover photo there is only intrigue and no clues as to what you're about to hear. Similarly as you run through both the track listing and the tracks themselves, Apple Rabbits keep it all secret until you're into the track to discover what it' all about, previous performing offering to guide. Distorted vocals and swirling keys give a sound that could have come from the underground at any point in the last forty years and still feel like they woke up yesterday morning.

This is an album of the cusp, left bank folk, art noire, dark, mysterious and yet sensual and comforting, an album that would kiss a skinned knee better, but also have put a foot out in the shadow for you to fall over. Cinematic is another good descriptor, but art house budget, a film that makes you think, but one that apparently has no plot, rather a loosely connected bunch of encounters bound by enigma.

If I was an American living in England, I'd be paying very close attention to every bit of bluegrass that crossed my path, because it's getting to the stage where so much of the really good stuff is originating on this side of the Atlantic. "Bite The Bullet" is the debut album from central Scotland's The Dirty Beggars and it sounds exactly like the real thing, because it is the real thing. The sound, the sentiment is all there,just wish they had had the courage to draw local references into their songs to make them distinctive as well as good or is that the next step. Top debut.

This is the second album in a relatively short space of time to set the works of W.B. Yeats to music and to be honest, I think it's the one that he would have prefered. "Nine And Fifty Swans" comes to us via Norway and Tirill and maybe it's that encounter with a different culture that sets this album ahead of the similarly themed effort by The Waterboys. The big winner here is the poetry of Yeats, it seems to find a more sympathetic treatment here, one that explores the setting of the words as much as the words themselves, where you can appreciate the form of words and music.

Angela Perley & The Howlin' Moons appear to be turning into habitual ep releasers, "Fireside" is the third on the trot with no sign of an album on the horizon, which is a bit of a shame, because they are definitely worthy of a shot at the bigger beastie. The sound is country rock swirling with added dna from the likes of Rosie Flores and Wanda Jackson and a classic, sex, death and trains motiff. Perley sings with a faux innocence that is enhanced by the dirty honky tonk playing of The Howlin' Moons and occasional Partonesque asides away from the main verse, chorus, verse structure.

"On Leaves Or On Sand" is her debut ep and is quite a calling card. I was disappointed with the opening track, Nick Drake's "From The Morning", but as soon as she hits the three traditional songs on the EP, her stunning voice really does come into it's own. It gains an expression that wasn't there in the opener, one that just leaves you standing in silent awe, almost forgetting the instrumentation.

Ancient symbolism is woven into the very fabric of the album, and right through the cover and sleeve notes, which gives the album a thoughtful edge on which to express ideas and beliefs. At times it does feel a little fey, but generally retains more of a feeling of mystery and legend through the almost timeless quality of the music. It does feel like the wildwood, the path across the moor following jack o lantern

As you would imagine of any band that includes an exclamation mark in their name Pyrates! are as riotous as they are raucous. "Buried Treasure" is an album that lives and dies on nautical cliches as it runs the plank of populist folk songs and does it with some style. This is one of those album that it's impossible not to enjoy. The musicianship is of a good standard the arrhhh's heartfelt. Sex, travelling and hard drinking are as good a basis for an album as any and it has to be said Pyrates! do the whole thing justice. Its not going to an album to challenge the intellect, but who cares?
