Talking To...Snakefarm
#NK Whilst on the subject, have you ever visited Paul Slade's wonderful murder ballads site, http://www.planetslade.com/murder.html I can highly recommend it.
#SF: There are a number of resources for murder ballads but I'm really only interested in the songs that hang around for a few hundred years. They've become part of the language and are more than literal tales of homicide (sororicide's more like it)
#NK Anna your music seemed to get recognised in Europe before the US and I get the feeling it's the same with Snakefarm, is that something you're conscious of and if so why do you feel that is?
#SF: Of course I'm aware of it but can't pretend to understand it, otherwise I'd fix it! I do what I do and it never fits in, anywhere really. When finished first recording I played it for friends in New York who pronounced it "English" which I eventually understood to be a bad thing. It didn't have that New York smell: neither Madonna's accessibility nor Sonic Youth's art school experiment. I liked them both though I didn't get the push up brassieres (Sonic Youth) or the dissonance (Madonna). Ho ho ho
#NK Are there any plans to bring a tour over in the near future?
#SF: Aha! That's a loaded question. Plans I have a plenty… they would choke a horse. Unfortunately the necessary funding would also choke the horse. But it really could work! In a theatre, with props and video and enough rope, animal masks and stories of that deeply strange and wild America that we were and are still, at heart.
NK Finally one more for Anna. There's a lot of visual arts experience in your family, were you ever tempted down that root and could you be tempted into a video project around "My Halo At Half-Light"?
#AD: Oh yes! We shot a lot of excellent video for "Songs From My Funeral" but editing was never completed, funding again. Now facing same quandary… The material cries out for visual accompaniment. Not literal re-enactments but the accretion of an atmosphere through image, sound and light that is spooky enough but not grotesque, goofy but touching, anguished but not pathetic and deeply, deeply weird!
I can't wait… Am seeking audience with the purveyors of cash grants for art project as we e-speak…
