It's a rainy night in Bristol and you're wondering around the docks looking for a place to shelter. You come across what looks like an old smugglers pub….you open the door and walk inside. The first thing you notice is the atmosphere of beer and laughter. Playing on a small stage is large group of musicians telling tales of earthy locals, lost loves and stories some best forgotten.

The name of that band is Poor Old Dogs.

A Fresh Pot of Mustard, their latest album, is aptly named as it's strong, hot and very earthy. I would imagine it is a representation of the Poor Old Dogs gig experience and an album that would sell well after a gig. It has all the atmosphere and grit that a gig would have.

This is not a sophisticated, over produced and laboured collection of songs. This is a collection of live experiences slung in a bucket, mixed well and then thrown on to a cd annd it's all the better for it. Not for the faint hearted, there is a lot of swearing and I mean A LOT and that may be my only problem with this. Although I am generally a fan of "cussing" as our American friends call it, I think it may count against the Poor Old Dogs when it comes to getting any radio play. But I doubt that they will care that much as this album will appeal to their fans and supporters of which I assume there are many. Folky, ballsy with even a hint of sea shanty A Fresh Pot Of Mustard will not disappoint.
