This album is most definitely for lovers of 70's music or children of parents who like 70's music and are always saying "if you want to hear real music, listen to the concept albums from the 1970's." It was originally released in 1975 and I recall it first time around which makes me feel pretty ancient. Not quite as old as Rod though.

Rod Argent is arguably one of the most influential musicians, music writers, performers and producers that the UK has delivered. His original band, The Zombies with Russ Ballard, Colin Blunstone and others still plays today. In recent years he has produced a large catalogue of music for TV and film whilst also acting as producer for his friend, Colin Blunstone, the voice of the 70's. If you are not aware of Colin Blunstone and wonder why I call him "the voice of the 70's" take a listen to his 2009 album, "The Ghost Of You and Me." Unsurpassed vocals!

Anyway, back to Mr Argent. This album, "Circus," is the first album he produced after his split from Russ Ballard. Released in 1975 as a typical "concept" album, it may be short on tracks but it rates very high on musical content. Terrific vocals and outstanding musicians coming together in a wonderful blend of quality and sound. The title is supposedly a metaphor for life. It was also the last album that was produced by Argent for CBS records.

To know this is a 70's album you just have to check out the instruments being used on it. Moog, Melotron, Hammond Organ, etc. At the time of the recording the band consisted of Rod, Robert Henrit, John Grimaldi and John Verity. It is fair to say that it was not a commercial success reaching only number 171 on Billboard. Despite that, it is well worth a listen second or even third time around as it was also reissued in the 90's. Rod Argent is a master musician and composer.

I am not quite sure why this album is being released again now, I am sure that Rod does not need the cash, but it is time to revisit this incredible musician and band. Some of the tracks sound slightly dated but that might because some modern popular music is at times so bland.

"Circus" is an album that will stand up against any concept album from any era. It is the work of a total genius and will certainly do no harm to Rod Argent's reputation. The highest praise I can give it is to say that it is almost as good as Camel's "The Snow Goose." Now that is another album to listen to!
