This evenings music was set in Camden, a place overflowing with brilliant music and tonight was no exception in terms of musicianship. In the intimate setting of the Green Note the harmonica maestro, Will Pound and his band worked pure magic.

However, the night started with Jo May, Toby Bennett and Debbs Chalmers. These three seem to be completely immersed in the Tradition of Northern England, demonstrating their knowledge of Music, Dance and the stories from that part of the world. Very rustic and traditional sounding fiddle playing combined with the thrilling dancing and steady percussion made for a brilliant opening act.

After the interval, the main act came on. Will Pound, (joined by Henry Webster on the Fiddle, Chris Sarjeant on the guitar and John Parker on the Double Bass) played tunes from Ireland, America and Northumberland as well as original material. Some clever arrangements as well as virtuosic playing was shown off during this portion of the evening.

One particular favourite of mine was Will’s tune, Waxy’s. Written for the great Glaswegian pub and hub of music Waxy O’Connor’s, this arrangement had a driving rhythm, a nice groovy bass line, some great percussive fiddle playing and very intricate harmonica playing.

I throughly enjoyed the evening and can certainly see why Pound was nominated for Instrumentalist of the year at this years BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards! If Will Pound is playing near you, I would highly recommend going!
