Hey Harley is Lizanne's newly formed duo with Bill Reveles and he joined her on stage for the duration of tonight's performance. Bill is a solo artist in his own right and recently teamed up with Lizanne to write some material in a bungalow which formerly served as a brothel in LA. Lizanne takes lead vocals on most songs with Bill adding backing vocals and guitar picking to Lizanne's strumming style.
Lizanne is a singer-songwriter from Philadelphia whose work is released through Proper Records and supported by Bob Harris. Finding herself inclined towards folk and blues from an early age there is little wonder Lizanne includes convincing versions of the blues songs 'I ain't goin down that road alone' (famously sung by Howlin' Wolf) and Black River by Amos Lee, also from Philadephia. At times Lizanne's own songs wander dangerously close to cliché but stop short to touch on universal and relatable truths for example on the song 'Be careful with my heart' she sings 'I am not bulletproof' whilst on 'Jesus or Elvis' Lizanne seems to relate the spiritual value of music.
Lizanne has a unique voice of many timbres which she uses to demonstrate meaning from hushed whispers to clean bell-like notes which pierce through the duo's two guitar texture. Lizanne's voice particularly comes alive on the bluesy numbers. The chromatics and breathy trailing off at the end of phrases suits the lower parts of her register. 'Could've been my man' is a stand out song on which the guitar is a driving force throughout and Lizanne's attitude is wrought with revenge. Similarly 'Come in for the Kill' is bursting with attitude and draws on the earthier aspects of Lizanne's voice. The interaction between the two guitars is at its best on this track and on 'Wonderful Day', one of the co-writes I find on hey Harley's pre-release EP (released Jan 2015 through Proper Music, UK).
Performed live the tracks from this EP are more intimate although on the EP the songs are more stylistically complete with the addition of electric guitar amongst other instruments. Whilst hey Harley is a new duo and the pair seem now to be finding their feet on stage, it is exciting to watch the early stages as these two experienced musicians form a new act before our eyes.
