Sunseeker is the 4th studio release from this Sussex based group of five talented musicians. I had the pleasure of reviewing their previous album which introduced me to both the band and to their well-rounded sound and performance.
With a sound akin to country or americana, but not solely, the line up consists of 2 ladies and 3 men. This is similar to that of Fleetwood Mac and it is possibly not surprising that some of their music bears a striking resemblance to the aforementioned megastars of the musical world.
The Equatorial group comprises Neil Grimes - Drums, vocals; Dave Davies - Guitars, vocals; Helen Weeks - Guitar, pedal steel, vocals; Andy Tourle - Bass, vocals; and Teresa 'Twe' Fox - Keys, vocals. They have also composed all of the music on this new album.
Due to the complications of working and performing during Covid, the previous album "Sea" took a long time to complete with a fair amount of ingenuity being engaged to record the music at different times and locations. The new album took just 5 days to record and produce, which in modern music industry time is working at the speed of Usain Bolt. You might think that a rushed album will be perhaps missing something. But no, this album is excellent, superbly produced and played with imaginative arrangements. There is no doubt in my mind that it can only help to enhance the reputation of the band and encourage even more followers.
From the opening driving track "Some Small Nature" with its classy guitar intro, via the Fleetwood inspired track "That Is true" though to the gentle slow finale of "Couldn't Help Myself" the listener will be taken on a journey of modern musical quality, lyrical brilliance and recording excellence. It is clear that the band enjoy each other's company which results in a tight and very listenable album of tracks, most of which emanate from the band's live performances. It is easy to see why the band now has such a keen and well-travelled following.
It never ceases to amaze me how much musical talent, encompassing all genres, is on display and available in this country. We music lovers are indeed very fortunate!
