Artist:Rob Jones & The Restless Dream Rob Jones & The Restless Dream came to my attention recently when I heard the track Cut So Deep and immediately fell in love with it. I was therefore delighted to receive his new EP 'Trees' on my desk this week. Rob is a Greater Manchester based musician, who was brought up on a diet of great American artists such as Dylan and Young, so its little wonder that this former English teacher produces his Country / Americana sound with such appreciation of the fine art of songwriting.
The EP of 4 original songs opens with Heart of the Storm. This has an upbeat tune and some great guitar hooks, but that somewhat disguises the fact that it talks of unrequited love. The reference to 'sitting beneath the trees and watch you go' not only expresses the frustration of rejection, but also influences the title of the EP.
Track 2 is 'Cut So Deep' and what a belter. It opens with a powerful lyrical delivery by Rob over a delicate piano before the full band sound kicks in. The chorus line 'who knew that love could curt so deep?' could be interpreted in different ways, but Rob clarifies himself "that losing love can be sometimes like a devastating explosion and more like a slow invisible haemorrhage". This is a lovely song.
The third track, 'Ballerina', is the lead single on the EP. This is a bit more 'country - pop' than the other tracks and really demonstrates how Rob can write an ear worm of a tune while speaking the narrative of the theme.
The final offering is 'a wistful reflection on the power of nature and escape'. Again, the piano opens the song 'Caroline' before the band and vocal kicks in with another upbeat song while exploring a delicate theme throughout the track.
Overall Trees is a fine offering that shows Rob as a fine songwriter with an ear for a catchy hook as well as reflecting deeper meaning in his lyrics. The musicianship from the rest of the band is outstanding.
