Ludwig Wright is a Berlin based British German songwriter. TURN OF THE TIDES OR WHERE WAVES COME FROM, a collection of songs thematically linked to water is his second album. Opening track "Deep Waters" sets up dangerous waters as an emotional metaphor in a pleasing song, with dare I say it, depth. Wright possesses a fine voice and is a nimble guitarist. The album is a mix of well constructed acoustic romantic songs like "How Many Lands And How Many Seas", where Ludwig's intimate voice and guitar are swelled by electronic strings and more lush arrangements.

"Dream Of You" is beautiful sounding love song where musically ancient meets modern like WHITE LADDER era David Gray. "Travelling Man" a classic drifter song, "How You Have Grown, "Come True" and The Show Of Hands like "Turn Of Tides" are powered by great guitar riffs and motifs, building slowly with layers of textures from Micki Meuser growing the acoustic sound. "Lighthouse" is a mystical tale, with hymn like vocals and that shimmering Celtic magic from late 80s Clannad. "Turn Of Tides" has a decidedly pop chorus, "Have You Ever Felt Awake Like This" is a upbeat almost pop song with jangling guitar and affirming lyrics. Similarly charged is the snappy but more self-deprecating "Start To Sing". These songs, while still inventive, reveal Wright's more Rock front man side. "Even If The Sky Is Burning" has, on paper, a simple arrangement, but Wright, second vocalist Bre Robertson backed by guitar and sensitive piano deliver one of the strongest tracks on the album. Similarly "How You Have Grown" may stick closely to the classic acoustic singer songwriter template Wright is seeking to personalise and grow, but the guitar and voice core shines through.

Interesting album that is built on and around a core of strong songs, with elements of classic acoustic singer songwriter and some more contemporary twists. Ludwig describes himself as putting the Rock n Roll into Folk and there is enough of both to make an interesting listen.
