From the attack of Elise's fiddle over Adam's furious guitar on the opening "Winne Hayes" set, the dance in "Chinquapin Hunting" to the two fiddles and Robert Alan Mackie's bowed upright bass on the "La Coccinelle" tunes this is an exciting album.

The notes on Canadian musicians, Elise Boeur and Adam Iredale-Gray's FIDDLE TUNES explain that the album was recorded live in a room. So the gentle picked guitar, slow beautiful fiddle melody and jazzy bass on "Evening Glory" is the unadorned sound of three musicians playing together.

Boeur and Iredale-Gray are members of the Juno nominated genre blending force that is Aerialists, with upright bass player Robert Alan Mackie frequently playing with them. Slow or fast familiarity means there is an almost telepathic level of communication between the players, finally recording tunes they have been playing together for two decades.

The album contains twenty two tracks mostly of Irish and Nordic origin, both traditional and newly composed, presented in twelve tracks. It is primarily a celebration of the music as demonstrated by the unison of two fiddles on "Polska efther Jons Persson". Booklet notes explain tune origins and often the process by which the pair learnt the tunes, providing rabbit holes of other recordings to head down.

After hearing the guitar playing on "Frank Thornton" and fiddle swoops and the changes on "Cock and the Hen" you will want to dig down into other versions. There is, something atmospheric and eerie about the interplay of Alan's bass and Elise's hardingfele or Hardanger fiddle on "Bureslatt Rull Fra Jolster" and the decidedly more upbeat following tune "Nils Og Jens Og Gjeidaug". As demonstrated on the "Rodney's Glory" this is celebratory dance music and impossible for your foot to not find the beat and get drawn in.

"London Ut" is a tune by the wonderful post rock influenced Icelandic Jazz band ADHD. Elise and Adam's arrangement of the tune that Elise was obsessed by, for two fiddles and bass keeps all the disquiet, atmosphere and suspense of the tune and shows how broad the Folk church is.
