Listen Up - Overcomplicated
A look at some of the emerging artists of the acoustic roots & folk circuit
This month's Listen Up feature puts the spotlight on Overcomplicated who are a harmony-driven Country/ Americana band with roots in the military and boots firmly planted in the British countryside. Blending rich vocals, sharp songwriting, and a healthy dose of self-deprecating humour, they bring original tunes about life, love, and the occasional wrong turn to stages big and small.
How would you describe your music?
Overcomplicated's sound is a heartfelt, toe-tapping blend of Americana, Folk, and Country-with a distinctly British twist. Think warm harmonies, irresistible melodies, and lyrics that actually say something. Whether we're weaving tales of love, loss, or the simple joys of life, our music aims to strike a chord and linger in your head long after the final note. We are made up of serving military, veterans and close family, using our experiences in the Armed Forces to help us write our songs.
We love the classic feel of American Country and Folk, but we also throw in a sprinkle of British Folk charm to give our songs a unique flavour. Our vocal harmonies are front and centre, layered over melodies that are as catchy as they are soulful.
Inspired by the likes of Wild Rivers, Luke Combs, Fleetwood Mac, and John Mayer, we aim to create songs that are just as perfect for singing along with your mates at a sunny summer BBQ as they are for winding down around a glowing campfire under the stars.
What has been your highlight so far?
The highlight for us has been recording new music and watching a song grow from a small idea in to something that you could listen to again and again. We have all played for large scale high profile events over the years as military musicians from playing overseas at Embassies or televised events such as HM Queen Elizabeth's funeral to performing for deployed Troops on operations. But writing and recording our own music has a real intimacy to it that brings out our collective creative sides.
What plans regarding recordings, video, tours etc do you have for the future?
At the moment we just plan to record an album's worth of music then get on the road and play it to as many people as possible. The emphasis for us is to just have fun with what we're doing and hopefully get the audience joining in with that fun. We plan to make some more music videos and potentially a series of acoustic group covers with a twist for our YouTube account.
