Abigail Washburn has been described as 'the best female clawhammer banjo player of her generation' quite what gender has got to do with it, I've no idea, take female out of that quote and it still works.
Abigail released the well received "City Of Refuge" album earlier in the year, an album that served to remind people that old timey music is far from dead and far from a vestige for the old. It's one of those albums that if it doesn't get you moving you've got no spirit left. There's parts of the south where they use it to check if someone has passed on before they lower the coffin.
For her debut appearances at Cambridge she's backed by a fine group of musicians known collectively as The Village, for what promises to be a really top performance. The banjo is a much underrated album, the butt of a fair few folk jokes, but in the hands of a mistress like Abigail Washburn, well, be prepared to be amazed.
