43rd Cambridge Folk Festival

Sunday

Another scurry across the site sees me back at the Club Tent. One Member of Dochas, Julie Fowlis, performed with Under One Sky, another member, Jenna Reid, is performing under her own name. She’s also a member of Deaf Shepherd and Filska, but that’s another story.
It’ a pretty full tent that greets her appearance. Ruthie Foster is just finishing and most of the audience decide to stay. Judging by the applause as myself and a couple of the other photographers arrive, it looks like she brought the house down.
Jenna’s performance is less raucous. There’s no stage djs here to change the mood, you’ve just got to hope that the audience can get their heads around the style change in the time it takes to plug in the instruments and do a quick sound check.
Ten minutes later and Jenna, together with her band are ready to go.
Jenna is part of a long line of top Shetland Island fiddlers. If the Devil went to Shetland, he’d realise that he’s actually a poor fiddle player indeed and golden fiddles would be come a common sight on the island, but I guess they’d sound awful.
Jenna’s performance is everything but, she has a great mastery of her instrument, her sets of tunes are passionate and entertaining.
If I thought I was starting to get jaded towards fiddle music this weekend, I was very wrong, this was vibrant stuff, just short of stunning and for me a fantastic way of ending the night.
I could have caught the end of Shooglenifty or fought my way into to catch the conclusion of Bellowhead, but this was a great finale to my festival.
There were the usual goodbyes to the various snappers and writers. The crew at the Media caravan, without whom this piece just wouldn’t be the same. A time to thank the others that helped make this festival what it is.
I hope you enjoyed the festival as much as I did, because without you there it wouldn’t be the same. You are part of the festival as much as those on the stage have a good one and see you next year.
