We start this edition of News & Snippets with news of a couple of West Country music festivals that are coming up, galloping right over the horizon almost as I type.
Frome Folk Festival is less than a fortnight away, over the weekend of February 18th and 19th. It's spread across 11 venues if you include all the pub sessions as well as the main venues. The line up includes Fatea Award winning act Jackie Oates as well as other Fatea Showcase Session artists Jamie Smith's Mabon, Cole Stacey, Luke Jackson and Radio 2 Folk Award nominees Pilgrim's Way. More details from www.fromefolkfestival.co.uk
Barely a month after that comes Bournemouth Folk Festival, March 23rd and 24th. The festival is focused on the BIC complex and includes Martyn Joseph, Andy Cutting and Martha Tilston amongst a broad sweep of performers. Also in the line up are Fearne, The Moulettes, Radio 2 Folk Award nominee Megan Henwood, who was on the last Fatea Showcase Session download and Holika who are on the current one. www.bournemouthfolkfestival.co.uk to get tickets and keep up to date.
Talking of awards, not only have three of the four nominees for the Horizon Award at the Radio Two Folk Awards(8th Feb) been on the Fatea Showcase Session Downloads, acts have also been doing very well on the other side of the pond: Gloucestershire based 'The Roving Crows'(above) have gained well-deserved international recognition by taking home 2 titles at the Irish Music Awards in Missouri on 28th January; The Roving Crows won 'Top Celtic Rock Band' and as if this coveted title was not enough, Caitlin Barrett also took home the prize of 'Top Fiddle Player'. www.myspace.com/therovingcrows
We've an apology to make with this one. We should have included it last week and it managed to fall victim to a senior moment. Johnno Casson makes heartfelt, personal & beautifully crafted music. With songs taken from a life of experience & sounds from an acoustic heart with a restless other worldly spirit. "This Is Essex" being the first track taken from a forthcoming album on Folkwit. Better known as Snippet, Johnno Casson is recording under his own name here to differentiate his musical directions http://folkwit.com/artists/johnno-casson
Finally for our video feature for this addition we go back to one of the acts that we've already mentioned, Pilgrims' Way. The band are the current holders of the Fatea Tradition Award and have just released a new single, The Handweaver And The Factory Maid. www.pilgrims-way.net/
The Fatea Showcase Sessions are a series of downloads featuring acts that we've really enjoyed and think that more people should get the chance to hear.
