Most recently gracing our pages owing to the addition of his musical talents at Ange Hardy's much lauded 'The Lament of the Black Sheep' launch this autumn (which is co incidentally one of the shortlisted nominations in our album of the year award), Lukas Drinkwater is also well know as a third of 3 Daft Monkeys who, after being spied by Mark Radcliffe at Glastonbury, were invited to perform live on his BBC Radio 2 show in November. That Glasto gig had a lot to answer for, namely a new collaboration with Tobias ben Jacob which has come to bear fruit in the form of a tour.
The two Devonshire based musicians met by chance last summer over a pint of their local's finest, and realised that they are both booked to play Glastonbury. Most would agree gamely to meet up and have a celebrational bevy on the festival site, but these two engaging and enterprising musicians took it a step or two further and decided to perform together. Blending a folky inheritance with a contemporary outlook and style, the only stumbling block was that they had never played together before and didn't know each other's material. Cue a heavy session in said pub on the Monday before the festival and voila ! A new musical pairing was born! The reaction was so positive that they vowed to continue working together when their other commitments allowed.
It would be a little premature to say that 'the rest is history', as it's more a case of the 'future is looking bright' for Lukas Drinkwater and Tobias ben Jacob !
Tobias remarks "it seemed our paths had crossed many times at various clubs and festivals over the years so that when we finally met it felt like a reunion of old friends"
The collaboration was spontaneously brought to life just six months ago and now, in January 2015 we are able to witness the musical match over 12 dates booked for this talented duo's debut tour.
The tour, which has just started, will run across 12 dates during January spread over the south of the country along the coast from Exeter to Margate, via London and Brighton and back via Stoud and Bristol.
Tobias clearly has an ear for a winner, having been in The Roots Union alongside Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin, winners of Best Duo at the BBC 2 Folk Awards in 2013, and is no stranger to success having performed live on air at BBC's Maida Vale Studios for 'Late Junction' on Radio 3, recorded music in Nashville, Tennessee and in Livingstone Studios, London (Bjork, REM, Richard Thompson) as well as toured many UK venues and festivals including Glastonbury, Green Man, Secret Garden Party, Larmer Tree and Electric Picnic (at the latter supporting J.Tillman of Fleet Foxes).
Joining the tour for two dates is special guest Kelly Oliver. Margate on 11th January and Stroud on 13th Jan to be precise. No stranger to these pages, the rising folk singer has just received a 4* review for her debut album from The Telegraph and was included in their Best Folk Albums of 2014 selection. A short listing in our Best Debut Album of the Year suggests that things will continue on a rapid trajectory for Kelly who is now being booked as headline act for other venues, such as Downend Folk Club on 16th January, in Bristol, among others.
Listen out for Tobias and Lukas on Daria Kulesh's The F Spot Live Sessions, which is broadcast on Blues and Roots Radio on Fridays at 10pm. 9th January sees an hour long special, promising an insight into the new duo and enables them to showcase their talents at the beginning of the tour.
