After a year out to focus on writing (her annual tour was a huge miss last year!) revered Nashville singer songwriter Gretchen Peters will return to her beloved North East and Sage to promote her new release Blackbirds, which has already taken the UK country charts by storm. Since playing her first gig in the North East back in 1996, she has built a loyal fan base here; fans return time and time again to hear Gretchen deliver songs both from her own recording career and her catalogue of songs written for others, from Etta James to Martina McBride, with many in between.
Accompanied once again by her partner, pianist and accordionist Barry Walsh (who himself recently released a new album) and Canada native instrumentalist extraordinaire, Christine Bougie, this is sure to be a night of new and loved music to take your breath away.
The intriguingly titled new acoustic folk roots group comprises three highly respected artists in their own right. Their first performance as a group was at 2015s Celtic Connections Festival in Scotland. A strange but fitting twist since all three have performed at Sage as part of various Transatlantic Sessions, which of course originated at Celtic Cinnections! The three are Sara Watkins, Sara Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan. Already taking the music industry by storm as solo singers and instrumentalists, it seems likely that together they will be a musical force to be reckoned with. See them now before they outgrow the intimate surroundings of Hall 2!
It is a fairly undisputed fact, certainly among her fans, that Thea Gilmore is one of the UK's most talented singer songwriters. This would certainly be agreed by her musical admirers; Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson and Joan Baez and Billy Bragg, well known writers William Boyd and Neil Gaiman and Poet Simon Armitage, to name but a few.
During a career spanning eighteen years so far, Thea has released a remarkable number of CDs and performed all over. It is no secret, however that one of her favourite venues is Sage, Gateshead and I'm sure that she and her fans, old and new, will be equally as happy to see her back on Friday May 15th 2015 at 8pm.
