Well what can be said about Townes Van Zandt that has not been said before,,,,,,,,,,well not a lot.
So what about Texas Rain, The Texas Hill Country Recordings to give it's full title. Well it is a collection of some of the great man's songs recorded with, as the sleeve notes say "a bunch of long time admirers" such as Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm. These recordings date back to before his death in 1997. In the early nineties he found himself at the Fire Station studio in San Marcos Texas recoding tracks for a proposed 60 track box set that was never released before he died. It was from these sessions that the tracks on this album were taken.
From the opening song If I Needed You with Emmylou Harris through to the last No Place To Fall with Willie Nelson it is a beautifully crafted masterpiece of a recording. Other gems on the album are Pancho And Lefty with Fredy Fender. Rubin Ramos & The Texas Revolution, Doug Sahm and Augur Meyer's and there is also At My Window which is a duet with Kathy Mattea. Townes distinctive voice is never overshadowed but beautifully complemented by the accompanying vocals.
I hate to use the terms Greatest Hits or Compilation, though it does not contain any new material but it does contain some great versions of songs from across his career. It is well worth a listen if you are a seasoned supporter or new to the music of Townes Van Zandt.
