While Matt Watson’s solo debut was called Grounded, its follow-up The Endless Shipwreck is full of nautical imagery, emotional storms and the weighing of life’s anchors.
The sound of rowing accompanies the spoken word first track, the poem Hope, about leaving the security of dry land for the uncertainties of the open sea.
Stories From The Sea is a celebration of our seafaring history. Matt sings with the passion of Joe Strummer, and is rousingly backed by The Vibe City Street Brass Band.
The plea ‘take me home’ is stated loud and clear in Hanging Around, a pledge to leave the rock and roll lifestyle behind.
Youthful nostalgia is the subject of We Were Young – ‘nothing seemed impossible then…full of hopes and dreams’. Wonder Stuff violinist Erica Nockalls provides beautiful accompaniment to this standout track.
Song For You is a declaration of love for an absent lover. When Matt sings of fires burning in his heart you can really believe it. Powerful and stirring stuff.
The collection is rounded off with the jolly and uplifting Let’s Jump Ship about the value of solidarity and a determination to bounce back from life’s setbacks.
This album is a voyage round the heart – not plain sailing but you’re in safe hands with Matt Watson.
