Various Artists
Album:Fatea Showcase Sessions Autumn 2010 - Windswept
Label:Fatea
Website: http://www.fatea-showcase-sessions.co.uk
With the usual caveat that this is one of our releases. It brings us up to number 10 in the series and like all the others it comes to you at no charge. Simply follow the link and download yourself a copy. It features fourteen great bands and hopefully you'll like what you hear enough to investigate the bands on the release further. All have released excellent albums on their own labels or small indies. "Windswept" is not genre specific, but features tracks from a number of acoustically inspired styles. "Windswept" is focused on bands of all shapes and sizes

The Roving Crows
Album:The Roving Crows
Label:Self Released
Website: http://www.rovingcrows.com
The Roving Crows self-titled album expresses their unique ability to deliver both exciting and thought-provoking original material alongside expertly delivered arrangements of traditional Irish Jigs and Reels. They have been described as "having originality in bucketloads" (Andy O'Hare BBC) and as "just pure musical energy" (Andrew Marston, BBC). These statements are definitely reflected in this CD which takes you on a journey from interesting social statement, straight into high emotion Dylan-esque numbers, to the climax of a fast-paced tune, funked up with eclectic drum and bass rifts.

David Celia
Album:I Tried
Label:XXI
Website: http://www.davidcelia.com
David Celia seems to have found the all too rare nirvana of introducing humour into his music without making the whole thing sound naff. More importantly he does it in such a way that the songs take repeated playing, a truly rare gift indeed. The trick would appear to introduced the comedy at a low level in songs about social interaction and include events we can easily relate to. Whilst we might not have driven down a highway steering the car with our knees whilst sussing out new tunes on the guitar, I bet a number of us have had the thought. Just add americana backing.

Mitchell Museum
Album:The Peters Port Memorial Service
Label:Electra Pysche
Website: http://www.mitchellmuseum.co.uk
A modern take on bubblegum rock that's forthier than a table load of cappuccinos in a bubble factory. Despite the implication "The Peters Port Memorial Service" is not a maudlin album, more of a riotous wake celebrating the life of loud and frivilous music. Glasgow's Mitchell Museum are showing all the signs of ripping it up South of the border. It's not the most interlectually challenging you're ever going to hear, the drummer's called Raindeer, which sort of sets a level. This is an album that's in danger of ringing the bell at the top of the entertainment scale.

Neville Skelly
EP:Child Of The Morning
Label:Watertown
Website: http://www.nevilleskelly.com
When I heard the rich baritone of Neville Skelly's voice, I was convinced that Texas had found a contemporary successor to it's son Roy Orbison. I could only imagine the chills running down the spine of a modern day Sam Phillips. Then I discovered Neville Skelly actually hails from a council estate in Liverpool, so it looks like that city gets to claim another poet. "Child Of The Morning" is full of poignant moments delivered with a heartfelt passion. The country accompanyment adding to a sense of emotional turmoil few can really attain on either side of the Atlantic.

John McIvor & the Tizzlettes
Single:Heroes
Label:Homesick
Website: http://www.johnmcivor.com
They say nostelgia's not what it used to be, but "Heroes" immediately envokes thoughts of the early 70s, not just in style, but also in content and thought. '72 protested unjust wars in Aisa, 2010 does the same. "Heroes" bemoans the loss of life on all sides, the innocent drawn into wars because men too scared to fight themselves have egos that can't be satisfied by debates. John McIvor floods his songs with expression and arranges them so that the message shares it's simplicity with the backing to create a mellow, almost floating feel that caresses it's way in.

Walter Trout
Album:Common Ground
Label:Provogue
Website: http://www.myspace.com/waltertrout
One thing you can't fault Walter Trout on is his consistency. In the twenty odd years that he's been releasing albums with his name on them I can't think of an album that's underperformed in terms of both songs and the playing and "Common Ground" is no exception. You can see why he's quoted as an inspiration to a number of blues guitarists, but I'd really like to hear him get out of his comfort zone and stretch himself a bit more, maybe take the sound in a different direction for a song or two. He knows his way around a guitar, sometimes he just needs to take more risks.

Colosseum
Album:Live05
Label:Ruf
Website: http://www.rufrecords.de
Yes this album has already seen the light of day several times and in slightly different guises since it was recorded five short years ago. There's a reason for that, Barbara Thompson, Chris Falowe and Clem Clempson plus Mark Clarke, Dave Greenslade and Jon Hiseman all at the top of their game. There's fourteen tracks spread across this double album each capable of being an example to be held up to explain why jazz and blues make such good bedfellows when being played for the sheer enjoyment of it rather than to prove some intellectual ideal. Quite simply it glitters.

24 Pesos
Album:Busted Broken And Blue
Label:Ourgate
Website: http://www.myspace.com/24pesos
If you like your blues deep down, dirty and electric, then "Busted Broken And Blue" is probably something you should take a good listen to. Hailing from London and having formed only just over two years ago, 24 Pesos have wasted no time earning themselves a blistering rep for their live performances and now have an album that captures that spirit so well, you can almost smell the sawdust. It's got a raw edge that cuts away at you flesh as it tries to stick it to you soul. Yet they can switch to almost gosple like innocence in the space of a dime.

Merlin's Keep
Album:Of This World
Label:Self Released
Website: http://www.myspace.com/merlinskeep
There's always been a close connection between the ecology movement and folk rock, Merlin's Keep stick to that tradition with many of the songs on their sophomore album, "Of This World" dedicated to the fate of the planet and the entwined destiny of man. The message is delivered with delightful melodies, tight harmonies and just a touch of whimsy that shows the band understand that in order to be heard for a message to be heard the listener must want to turn their ear to it. There's a real depth to the sound, like their ideals, this is a band that continues to grow and flourish.

Magdalena Solis
Album:Lady Of The Wild Things
Label:Reverb Worship
Website: http://www.myspace.com/magdalenasolis
"Lady Of The Wild Things" is and album steeped in psyche, not only the sound, but also of the goddess like figure from whome it is derived. It's an album that on first and even second or third listening is hard going. It wears it's continental roots on it's long and swirling sleeve, but at it's heart does beat a genuine wildness. If you give them the chance, Magdalena Solis, will reveal an album that reaches out and touches the darker side of the mind, but in a midnight blue and stars sort of way. It won't be to all tastes but, it is an album that has a thrall like quality that seeks opportunity.

Tony McLoughlin
Album:Ride The Wind
Label:Self Released
Website: http://www.tonymcloughlin.com/
There is something within artists like Tony McLoughlin that strike a chord. Had the threads of fate twisted in a different way they may well have been household names or at least very familiar, it certainly wasn't talent that held him back. Despite the lack of fame and fortune knocking on their door, they remained faithful to their mistress, music. "Ride The Wind" is a well crafted album full of strong songs from a man with a lot of experience of life to share. It contains elements of poetry blended with a bluesy core. It's an album of experience and expression.
