Listen Up - Will Purdue

A look at some of the emerging artists of the acoustic roots & folk circuit

How would you describe your music ?
A cheap Leonard Cohen rip off? No but I do adore the classic songwriters who wore their hearts on their sleeves. I use my songs as a place to be honest and get feelings out I might not share so well in conversation, so it's quite confessional. I'd describe my main genre as Alt Country, and I'm hugely influenced by late sixties / early seventies songwriters (Dylan, Joni, Cash) for overall sound, but also by a lot of 80s Alt Bands such as The Cure and The Smiths.

What has been your highlight so far?!
There's two that really stand out, the first being a huge hall, full to capacity at Celtic Connections Festival (Glasgow Concert Hall). It was truly an honour, plus an amazing day out with friends. The second is my EP launch a few weeks ago! We had a listening party, and I set the room to recreate the music video (to literally bring people into the project, plus something quite meta about watching the premiere of the video from inside the video!), and it was a great night of free beer (Thanks And Union), amazing people and a live set that went so well (myself, Maria Brashier On Vocals, uke and shaker, plus Darwin Chang violin). To show your project to the people that have supported you most and thank them is truly special.

What plans regarding recordings, video, tours etc do you have for the future?
I've already started writing and arranging the next EP / Album, but going to hold back the enthusiasm a little as that won't begin until next summer (he says, recording is one of the best bits!). I'm just arranging some UK dates for next March, but also there are some plans in the works for The Netherlands, Germany and Spain, which will be my first tours in Europe and a dream come true! Also I'm releasing a fortnightly music video over the next 8 weeks, and my EP has just arrived, so please do check that out.

Is there anything else you would like to say or any message to our readers ?
As someone reading this, thank you so much for supporting bands trying to make their way, your support is invaluable.
