If an album's got an anthem on it, you're halfway there. People will always come back for an anthem and That First Time has an anthem and a half. The track "Sunny Days" is a real sing-a-long number delivered with style and panache.
It evokes days at the seaside, pints at a country pub after making love in a hayloft. Making the most of the time before the rain comes, before the storm clouds gather. The fresh sweep of first love and new relationships. It's a catchy chorus and must be fantastic performed with the whole crowd singing.
"That First Time" is worth buying for "Sunny Days", but you get five other tracks to go with it, all of which speak to you in different ways. Eoghan Colgan is quite a writer. He knows a good lyric when it reaches him. Consequently "That First Time" is a mini album full of songs.
For the delivery Eoghan draws a band around himeself, Mark Sommerville(gtr), who co-writes one of the tracks, Jamie Haig(bass) and Stevie Ross(drm). All of the band are accomplished musicians and give Eoghan a solid framework to weave his vocals around. It delivers a sound that sits in the acoustic rock spectrum that produced the likes of the Waterboys, amongst others.
Even across the space of six songs the sound varies from sparse and intricate to rich and full. The vocals and the lyrics pin down the continuity with a good twist of phrase and a voice that can move from delicate to energy in the space of a sixpence.
"That First Time" is a mini album that it's very easy to enjoy. It makes you want to listen and it entertains and that hits most of the essential criteria. "Ohh Sunny Days" repeat to fade.
