Wob
Take equal parts Clash, Smiths, Levellers and Billy Bragg, the outfit they call WOB has been kicking up a storm in one form or another for more than 20 years. It's a peppy, lyrically astute formation that capably showcases singer Wob (ex-Blyth Power) and his gutsy songs about life, love and everything else in between. There's much to take note of here: Skin invokes late-period Morrissey/Marr compositions, Ordinary Man is an intelligent paean to the keen possibilities of the average, Two Stroke laughs at those who are obsessed with notions of cool transport, To the Stars manages sweet tenderness, Thought To Say beats with plaintive emotional realism and You'll Be Fine offers up a neat cornet refrain.
As welcoming as a hot cuppa after a long night, Wob's songs are clearly benefitting from the expanded band line up which offers greater versatility without swamping their integral big heart and bright head.
