I have to admit that the Texan Quebe (pronounced Kway-Bee) Sisters Band was a new name to me. The CD was a fairly neew experience, too. The band comprises siblings Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe backed by Joey McKenzie on guitar and Drew Phelps and Dennis Crouch on upright bass and this, their follow up CD to Texas Fiddlers, was recorded in the beautiful Cash Cabin Studio, located in the woods of Hendersonville, Tennessee. Both they and their CD are garnering great praise, including from such renowned musicians as Ricky Skaggs, Jimmy Buffett and Marty Stuart

The reason for the CD’s title is immediately obvious; from the outset and the opening track of So Long to the Red River Valley, that this album harks back to times gone by. The sisters possess gorgeous voices and their stunning harmonies are perhaps best showcased in such songs as So Long to the Red River Valley, Across the Alley from The Alamo, Georgia on my Mind and Along the Navajo Trail, whilst their musical abilities shine through in such instrumentals as Bob Wills’ old tune Twin Guitar Special, the more traditional Speed the Plow Medley, Air Mail Special and the renowned Duke Ellington's legendary tune, Take the 'A' Train. With that said, perhaps the highlight of the album is when the two (vocals and instrumental) converge, resulting in the wonderful Roly Poly, during which the girls, more than once, remind me of The Andrews Sisters; a sound that truly belies their years.

Incidentally, The Quebe Sisters Band will be playing here in the UK this summer and I think it could be well worth a venture out to see them.
