Saffron Byass
"Speak Your Truth" is a contemporary blues album by Hull-born singer-songwriter Saffron Byass. However, it more than just another British blues album. What makes it stand out are the songs. They were written by Saffron during the snowy winter of 2010/11 and subsequently performed live at the Burton Agnes Jazz and Blues Festival in 2011.
According to Saffron, the theme of the songs on the album is "about living in the present moment in a state of love, joy and peace ". That theme certainly comes across in this lovely album.
There is definitely a spiritual thread running through the lyrics which is reflected in the tasteful playing of the excellent band ,which comprises Pete Sklaroff [guitar], Jami Sheriff [keyboards], Rich Hammond [bass] and Dave Walsh [drums].
Saffron has a beautiful, clear voice which is not a million miles away from the jazzier side of the late American singer Eva Cassidy [for example, her version of "Wade in the Water "].
One of my favourite aspects of this album is the superb playing of Yorkshire guitarist Pete Sklaroff. Indeed, Saffron describes the album as" indulging my passion for the sound of the Fender Stratocaster ". If proof were needed, just listen to Pete's solos in "Let It Go" and "Yes I Do". Credit should also go to keyboard player Jami Sheriff, another well-respected jazz musician, who contributes a number of excellent solos ,including great electric piano on "All That Really Matters is Now".
One of the highlights of the album is the title track "Speak Your Truth - Parts 1 and 2".Part 1 is a powerful blues-rock number which segues into the much more tranquil Part 2 ,to end the album on a gentle note.
Overall, this is an excellent album which grows on me with every listen. With thoughtful, intelligent lyrics which clearly come from the heart, lovely vocals and superlative musicianship, this album deserves to be heard by a wide audience - it's not just for blues fans!
