Canadian Nikki Werner has recently released her second album, Girl's Night In. It has been desribed as 'a pure example of what Nikki stands for as a woman in today's society.' And it is clear to see what inspires the comparisons with Martina McBride's voice and Terri Clark's attitude!
Nikki Werner's latest CD featuring the Rodney Atkins penned song "How Can You Love Someone" and her current radio single "Let Your Love Flow," was produced by Ron Briggs who has worked with other notables such Aaron Pritchett, Lisa Brokop, and Farmers Daughter to name but a few.
Six of the 10 songs were co-written by Nikki with noted writers from both Canada and Nashville such as Tim Taylor and Rick Tippe. A surprise addition, certainly to me, was an updated version of the Bellamy Brothers classic Let Your Love Flow, which works surprisingly well. The backing on the majority of the songs give the album a mostly country tinged sound, which suits Nikki's vocals perfectly.
A stand out track for me is Woman's World; a song to which I think all women will relate - lots of women whom I know live this song every day of their lives. This song also, whilst being upbeat allows us to hear the true quality of Nikki's voice. Memories is more of a ballad and is about the memories we make in life and how much fun it can be recalling them; 'You know those little things you love so much…like a smile, a hug and a sweet warm touch.' Another great song is That's Life. Whilst ostensibly about a relationship, the concept that 'some days are good some days are bad' and that's life again is something we can all relate to. Never tomorrow describes one of those moments in life that truly changes us and we wish we could hold onto a while longer. Girl's Night In is a rockin' country song which could easily make the country charts, about the nights we girls just want to indulge ourselves. I could easily imagine Terri Clark or Sara Evans singing this one.
In conclusion, Girl's Night In is a striking country album which really ought to put Nikki Werner a little further on the map.
