A good size crowd at Mr Kyps awaited the arrival of Fish and his Fish Heads Acoustic Tour. The stage layout was very simple, a microphone, a seat for the guitarist, keyboards and a makeshift bar with some bottles of wine and water.

Warm applause welcomed Fish to the stage who then set out the rules for the evening.

  1. Photography is OK, but no flash. He explains that he is an old man with a deivious past and the flash from cameras could just set him off.
  2. No video. If you want him in a video he is more than happy to join you in an adult orientated themed video on the beach under the pier after the show.
  3. And to the biggest applause, No Talking, and to paraphrase his reason. It would make him very upset.

Fish was then joined on stage by guitarist Frank Usher and Foss Paterson on keyboards and who then proceeded to play some amazing acoustic versions of both Marillion classics and material from his solo years. At one point he was off the stage and in the crowd for some up close and in your face singing. Between songs Fish gave some anecdotes about his songs and what was going on in his head when he wrote them or at least what he could remember.

The trio delivered a powerful 90+ minute set, during which the highlight for me was an outstanding encore of Sugar Mice. The house lights went up with the crowd still demanding more and who reluctantly have to leave into the cold night after a rewarding evening of first class entertainment.

There are only so many hours in a day and only so many gigs we can get to. We'd really like to expand our national coverage of the live scene as it remains the life blood of music.

Are you able to help us and the artist you're seeing out by dropping us a review once you get back home, and maybe even a picture. If you are able to help, Mail Us your review and we'll get it up as quick as we can
