For those fortunate enough (or unfortunate enough) to lounge around a pool for a fortnight this Summer, in sweltering heat, try sticking Chad Neaves debut album; 'Something In My Soul' on the poolside bar compact disc player and see how the music complements the scene. The album in question is total Summertime music! It's happy, it's swinging, it's for the young pretty people who like to pay good money to get a tan, a holiday romance, and a hangover. On the flip side though, not everybody likes baking hot sunbathing holidays, like they won't all like the Summer sounds of Chad Neaves, for Chad describes his genre as acoustic/surf/pop, and there you have it - that's what it is.
The first track on the album, 'Wonderful Day', says it all. It's feel-good soul for the young at heart. There's some nice grooves in 'Changing Everyone', and 'You Said' is a funky swinging number. In a similar vein with Jamiroquai, and with sounds of Lenny Kravitz in his more tame and soulful times, 'Something In My Soul' isn't bad if you like that sort of thing.
Chad has a decent voice for this genre of music and a well played rhythmic guitar style. There's a professional quality to the album, but on a down-side the tracks do tend to merge into one another without too much notice. However this is even more of an indication that Chad's debut album is ideal for background music whilst you're sprawled out in the garden with an easy read.
The whole album is like a big smile on the face of a young man who is feeling good because of either a nice girl, a flash car, a cold beer, a good surf! Not at all disturbing or deep and meaningful; it's quite simply happy stuff.
