44th Cambridge Folk Festival

The Waifs

The last time The Waifs played Cambridge, they pretty much stole everything but the canvas. Donna, Vicki and Josh would have been unknown to a lot of the audience when they first graced the Mainstage back in 2003.
By the time they walked off the stage they had the whole audience eating out of their hands. It lead to packed performances on both the other stages and, what was at the time, record sales at the onsite Proper Records
They've maintained a very Aussie flavour to their sound and lyrics, taking their inspiration from people and places down under. It's lead to some interesting subject material
The band started out as just the two sisters, Josh was picked up along the way. Travel being a regular theme in the writing. This really is a band not to be missed.
The last time The Waifs played the festival they managed to leave their camcorder in a taxi. If you've still got it or the tape, please let them have it back.

Post Festival Thoughts

The Waifs were never going to have the same impact they had with their debut. They went from being unknown to a band where everybody knows your songs, even those from the new album "Sun Dirt Water". That was never going to stop them putting in an impressive performance and it didn't. The audience sang along, shouted requests, this was one of the must see shows for a lot of people. Judging from the reactions and the album queues they hit the mark for a lot of people. I did meet one person who complained they weren't Australian enough, whatever that means.
