44th Cambridge Folk Festival

Mauvais Sort

Cambridge wouldn't be Cambridge without at least one Canadian band and this year that duty is performed by Quebecois combo Mauvais Sort. Mauvais Sort, the name translates as Bad Spell.Any band that features a picture on their website of the band sat around a table of beer and more than one of the band looking decidedly the worse for wear is alright by us. Particularly when it appears that they can shake it off and go out and play.
The band are a number of albums to the good and the regional style is one that's full of energy and designed to get you up on your feet and dancing along.
Mauvais Sort opened the Festival on the Radio Two Stage back in 2006. It was a great way to start the festival. Unfortunately it was their only set and they were missed by people still arriving. Definitely worth checking out

Post Festival Thoughts

Mauvais Sort opened the Friday and pretty much made evedrybody forget about the weather. Chants, stomps, sing-a-longs all had the crowd engaged in major audience participation. This is a band that knows how to have a good time and knows how to bring every one into it. They've started calling their music 'folk 'n' roll' and it's easy to see why. They played both main stages and then did something a little different when they appeared in the Brian McNeill Session. The new album "Mauvais Sort" includes songs recorded last time they were here. A really good band to be in the audience for.
