3 Daft Monkeys
The West Country seems to be mounting a major bid to be the home of the naughties folk revival. Playing it's part on the left wing, in the outfield is folk/world rockers, 3 Daft Monkeys. The band seem to have been
propelled to success on the back of their "Hubbadilla", almost appearing from no where. The fact that "Hubbadilla" was the bands third album and they had been grafting away on the live circuit at home and in Europe, should
put the overnight success myth to bed.
It might be that the band's new album "Social Vertigo" partly reflects that climb in it's name. 3 Daft Monkey's are now definitely mixing with the upper echelons of folk rock/crustie world, with support gigs alongside the likes
of the Levellers as well as headline tours in their own right.
Despite being a trio, Tim Ashton(vox gtr whistle), Athene Roberts(vox fiddle) and Jamie Waters(bass), 3 Daft Monkey's have built themselves a big sound that seems eminently suitable for the festival stage.
English folk forms the core, but is blended with a number of other influences, Gypsy and Easter European folk, punk, dub and a touch of reggae to give them a sound that reaches around the globe as well as to the spirit.
It's real foot stomping music, bright and breezy as far as the sound goes, but don't let that fool you into not listening to the lyric. There is a real depth to 3 Daft Monkey's that gives lie to their almost casual exterior.
Post Festival Thoughts
A great way to end Thursday Evening in the Club Tent. Wild and raucus a great way to get in the mood for meeting up with friends and having a beer or two. Definitely a band to watch live if they turn up at a venue near you
