Toots And The Maytals

Toots Hibbert is considered to be one of the founding fathers of ska and one of the artists that moved it in the direction of reggae. Toots, was also a man brought up on gosple and soul which helped give the Maytals, as they were originally known a distinctive sound. As the band drifted into being Toots and The Maytals it was that distinction that gave them their focus.
It might be ironic, but had Toots not been busted for marijuana possession, back in '66 just after the group had won a major song contest in the native Jamaica, the band might have been truer to the song that gave them their initail break and drawn away from the experimentation Toots enforced absence ment they could explore on his release.
Toots And The Maytals have traditionally gone down a storm wherever they've played. It's because at heart, Toots and the band are showman, not just performers.
