43rd Cambridge Folk Festival

Steve Earle

Steve Earle, aka Mr Allison Moorer, last played Cambridge back in 2003 when he more or less single handedly, did his best to bring the house down. Prior to that set I remember having conversations about how it won't be the same without the band. I even weighed up giving it a miss and going off to see Oi Va Voi. It was only because I'd already seen them that Earle got the nod. Oi Va Voi's loss was very much my gain.
Steve Earle is an artist that puts everything into a song, because he's been there. His journety has taken him to hell and back again. Great highs and depressing lows. He's captured it all and turned it into great songs. It's because they are great songs that they sound just as good delivered solo as they do a band. Almost like an Americana version of Richard Thompson, though with more arrests.
It's because of it's record as both writer and performer that I reckon this has the potential to be one of the sets of a festival. Emotionally Mr Earle appears to be very much on an up at the moment, Potentially that will give Steve the energy he needs to take his set from 0 to 60 in three chords.
