Los De Abajo
Various flavours of latin
based music have lit up the Cambridge stages in recent years, with
acts from a number of different parts of Spain and Portugal, bringing the flavour of
the Med to East Anglia. One of this year's Latin bands brings more the taste
of the Carribean, well Gulf Of Mexico.
Los De Abajo could almost be described as a
Mexican Chumbawamba. Many of their songs have a political bent, but as with some of the better
protest singers, the message reaches more people if it's wrapped up in great music
and songs that people want to listen to. Political protest is fine, but get's
you no where is people aren't listening.
Los De
Abajo, named after a novel about the Mexican Revolution, bring together a fusion
afro-latin rhythms wit an occasional rock back beat, a splash or
two of salsa and reggae and a little bit of punk attitude.
They've been going since 1992 and have had a number of nominations for various
world music awards.
This is the band's Cambridge Debut and will be my first time seeing them.
