42nd Cambridge Folk Festival

Julie Fowlis

Julie Fowlis is another artist stepping up from a showcase session last year to a full festival appearance this. The other being Seth Lakeman. Whilst Lakeman picked up a Mercury short listing, Fowlis picked up the Horizon Award, for emerging talent, at this years BBC Radio2 Folk Awards.
Part of the reason for that success was the release of Julie’s solo debut release, “Mar A Tha Mo Chridhe (as my heart is)” An album recorded in Scottish Gaelic, the language of Julie’s native island of Uist. I don’t pretend to know what the songs are about, word for word, or even any words, but it means you have to feel your way into the songs and for that I think you gat that something different back.
Last year may have seen Julie’s debut solo album, but she has also picked up gigging and recording experience as part of Dochas, a band that also graced a Cambridge Stage, closing the Club Tent on the opening Thursday night a couple of years back. As well as featuring a fantastic voice, Julie is also blessed with piping and whistling skills.
