42nd Cambridge Folk Festival

The Chieftains

It's been twenty one years since Gaelic legends, The Chieftains graced the stage at Cambridge and they are still going as strong as ever as a 2006 Grammy nomination shows. Since the band were formed, back in 1962 they have knocked up an impressive set of firsts.
First western band to play on the Great Wall Of China(And like the wall not visable from space)  First band to play a gig in the Capitol Building, Washington. During all of this a consistent factor has been group founder Paddy Moloney.
Despite the age of the group, any two of the band are older than the whole of Bodega, or perhaps because of it, the band have continued to apply a lovers approach to their music. i.e. they play from the heart, which might mean they upset a part of teir audience who may only go for say the traditional side. Well the traditional Cheiftans wouldn't have got to play Roger Water's "The Wall" live in Berlin.
Forty Four years as a band is good going by anyone's calculations, it's particularly good for a band that came together as a one off. I suspect it will be standing room only for this one.

Post Festival Notes
As expected it was standing room only. It seemed like there was a good number that had come on the Saturday night just for this. I suppose you've got to treat every Chieftains gig like it's the last one you're going to see. The band certainly seem to treat it like it's the last they're going to perform and leave you with something a little bit special. They pulled in traditional dancers of both genders. Added a few musicians to round out the sound and delivered a highly entertaining set, that judging by the audience reaction it was one that went down very well.
