42nd Cambridge Folk Festival

Cerys Matthews

There can’t be many people who were listening to, the then of Catatonia, Cerys Matthews belting out “Road Rage” thinking ‘you know I think there’s a folk/country artist trapped in an indie band making a cry for freedom’ yet that’s pretty much what was starting to bubble below the surface. Those that had heard Catatonia’s early material were less surprised when following the breakup of the band, she appeared on the 2002 Folk Awards dueting with Eliza Carthy. Even less surprised when she popped across the Atlantic to record her country tinged debut, “Cookahoop”, for, despite it’s obvious Welshness, which her voice seemed so perfectly suited.
Cery’s has taken sometime out to enjoy motherhood, but things definitely seem back in the starting blocks. She performed the Kirsty MacColl part when the Pogues played Cardiff at the end of last year. She’s had a charity single out in support of the campaign to raise literacy in her native Wales. The second album’s due(delayed by the birth of her second child) and may be out by the time you read this.
Cery’s Mattews at Cambridge, now there is a very intriguing thought

Post Festival Notes
Cerys may have initially forgotten that she was at a folk festival as she opened with a couple of rock numbers, but we generally didn't car. Cerys is a performer that has cover a lot in her career, from indie to torch. Judging by her perfomance here the new album will be more rock and a little less country than her last, but will definitely be on our buying list. She's an artist that understands the festival stage and produced a set to match. Her set was lit by the setting sun and the smile just beamed from her face
