Bodega
Cambridge has always tried to ensure that the next generation of artists feel
comfortable with both the festival and opportunities to get involved in folk
music. It does that in two ways, by having the showcase sessions in the club
tent and by making a slot available to the winners of the young tradition award.
Eddie Barcan is one of the judges
This year that award went to Bodega, who
beat of competition from 47 other bands and solo performers for the award. As
well as playing Cambridge the band will also be at Cropredy and Towersy(but may
not be traditional enough for Sidmouth :-)
They comprise: Gillian Chalmers
(17), pipes and whistle; Ross Couper (17), fiddle; Tia Files (16), acoustic and
bass guitar; Sandie Forbes (18), fiddle and vocals; Norrie MacIver (18),
accordion, guitar, djembe, vocals; and June Naylor (17), clarsach and piano. The
musicianship is fantastic so catch it whilst you can.
Post Festival Notes
Unusually for Cambridge this band had one member less playing than won the Young Tradition Award, Sandie Forbes
was not with the band. Education and other commitments start kicking in. I saw the band at Stage Two and it's members
appearing in various parts of The Session. It continues to amaze me how these bands can get so talented so young. I had
a really good time listening to this combo.
