42nd Cambridge Folk Festival

Anna Massie Band

Anna Massie performed a showcase session back in 2003. Although billed as a solo slot, the set was also performed by Mariearad Green and Jenn Butterworth, the trio would later become officially described as the Anna Massie Band.
This year sees them returning for a full festival debut. I recall the set quite well, we’ve got the pictures on the 2003 site. It was a really enjoyable session, that the girls and the audience seemed to take delight in. One of the reason’s it’s taken awhile for the girls to get back is education.
Unfortunately so many great young folk bands, including young tradition winners, seem to spark just before the course work and energy of college study has it’s impact on the bands. Fortunately, this is one act that has come out the other side, pretty much unscathed and now has the time to rebuild it’s reputation.
One of the ways they’ve done that is with the release of the “The Missing Gift” album as well as extensive gigging as a band as well as in connection with other projects. (It’s illegal to be a Scottish musician in a single band)
We’re looking forward to remaking our acquaintance.

Post Festival Notes
I caught the band on three occasions, listened to them from outside of the Club Tent, watched them in the Brian McNeill Session and on Stage One. On every occasion they showed that they've come through the college years as a very strong unit that gives the impression they love what they are doing. The sound is fresh and solid and for most of the set the girls smiled their way through.
