41st Cambridge Folk Festival

Old Crow Medicine Show

Old Crow Medicine Show were the surprise hit of last year's festival. A surprise because they weren't even booked to play. They had been supporting Gillian Welch on tour and were along for a guest slot in her set.

As it was circumstances conspired in their favour. They ended up playing their particular blend of bluegrass in front on of the Mojo Signing Tent, on the Radio Two Stage as part of the Session and on Stage One, when the Dixie Hummingbirds were delayed by aircraft problems.

The band are a four piece that show bluegrass isn't just old timey music for old people. It's got drive and energy, heck it's dance music. These are four polite southern gentlemen who were described by a female fan last year as being the hotest thing on stage, with or without instruments.

This year the band are back in their own right and we are expecting great things from them. They really did themselves proud last year and were a highlight for many. Definitely one to check out.

POST FESTIVAL VERDICT

I still remain impressed with these boys. They continue to keep bluegrass as a living genre. They've added a number of new songs, mostly self written, to their routine. I like the way they continue to huddle, even when on a big stage, except for the banjo players that is. It's like the banjos, of which there were two, are like wings to the main body. Maybe it was something that said. I missed their performance outside the Mojo Tent this year. The memory of those lost photos from last year still on my mind :-)
