41st Cambridge Folk Festival

Hayseed Dixie

Most years there's a band at Cambridge that I'm told are pretty damn fine, but I just don't get. Often that band is Ezio, but this year it's Hayseed Dixie.

They've beed hailed as witty for their brand of rockgrass, the combining of classic rock tunes into a bluegrass stylee, like it's not been done before or better.

AC/DC and Kiss are just two of the band's to enjoy the experience of a Hayseed makeover, but ironically it's the band's first album, A Hillbilly Tribute To Mountain Love, which shows what the band might have been capable off with a bit more effort

If you want funnier original country, try Short & Curlies/Death by Country, if you want funnier cover versions try Boxhedge Clippers, you really should listen to their versions of Wannabe and Hit Me Baby One More Time. Unfortunately neither are playing this year.

Hayseed Dixie are the latest version of the emporer's new clothes and it won't be long before the joke is laid bare. Hopefully not before the festival is over, but I'm not holding out much hope.

POST FESTIVAL VERDICT

Hayseed Dixie proved me wrong. Live their a great band with some good between song banter. They're competent musicians. I enjoyed what I saw, and that's the key, they are a live band, I still don't like their records.
